What’s the Best Carrier Oil for CBD?

What’s the Best Carrier Oil for CBD?

So, you’re thinking about trying CBD, the wellness product that you’ve heard so much about over the last few years? Maybe you’re looking for options with pain management; maybe you’re looking for help getting a better night’s sleep; or maybe you’re looking to feel a general sense of calm on a regular basis. But rather than taking pure CBD (which is a highly potent crystal or powder that is difficult to measure out and digest), CBD is usually mixed into a carrier oil—a type of nut-based or plant-based oil that is used as a vehicle for the CBD and other active ingredients derived from the hemp plant.

As you can imagine, all carrier oils are not equal. And these differences could matter a lot to you for various reasons. Because they are nut-based or plant-based, some people may be allergic, some might experience skin irritation, or some might not like the taste.  On the plus side, however, the various carrier oils offer their own range of health benefits and advantages, and that might make them more desirable to you for any CBD product.

In this article, we will list the most common carrier oils used for CBD oil, and we will explain, in our experienced opinion, which oils offer the biggest advantages for you as a CBD user. Of course, if after reading this article you have more questions about various carrier oils used in CBD products, we invite you to contact us at Nirvana Health and Wellness.  Don’t be afraid to start your path to wellness with our Essential Oils and CBDs.  Please contact us using our contact form online or email us at support@nirvanahaw.com.

What Carrier Oil Does for You

Why is CBD infused in carrier oil better than pure CBD? Besides the difficulty in measuring pure CBD since the doses have to be so small (it’s extremely powerful), powdered CBD is not very bioavailable. That is, it cannot be easily absorbed by your body. In fact, the presence of fat in the carrier oils helps your body absorb, and thus utilize, the CBD.  That is because CBD is a fat-soluble substance.

When CBD is combined with a fatty oil, it directly binds with the fat molecules that your body is already prone to breaking down. It combines seamlessly with dietary fats. So once the CBD is evenly distributed within the carrier oil, it is easier to evenly measure consistent amounts of CBD, and it delivers the CBD in a better vehicle that your body can more effectively process. That’s called a win-win.

What Types of Carrier Oils Are Out There?

There are several carrier oils used by different CBD brands. We here at Nirvana Health and Wellness mix multiple carrier oils into the same product for a unique blend. Some of the most popular carrier oil choices, including their positives and negatives, are outlined here.

1. Hemp (Hempseed) Oil. Hemp oil (also known as “hemp seed oil”) is made by pressing the seeds of the hemp plant to release a natural oil. Since the hemp plant produces CBD, hemp oil is arguably one of the bests carrier oils for CBD. Unrefined hemp oil has a slightly green color and a nutty flavor. Hemp oil has a range of potential health benefits, including improving your skin health, and it also contains other beneficial naturally occurring health supplements like phytonutrients, phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. Although hemp oil may seem like the perfect choice for CBD carrier oils, it tends to not reach full bioavailability on its own. Rather, it often reaches its maximum potential when it is mixed with oils with higher bioavailability, such as MCT oil.

2. MCT Oil. MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides, an easily digestible type of fat. MCT is typically derived from coconut oil and contains 90% saturated fat. It has little to no flavor and is thinner than most oils. MCTs are easier to digest and absorb than long chain triglycerides (like the ones found in olive oil). That means that the CBD they carry is released into your system quickly, and the higher bioavailability means that a higher percentage of the CBD content may be absorbed into your bloodstream. MCT oil has the highest concentration of fat-soluble compounds, and it preserves more CBD during the extraction process than other oils. A recent study even suggested a link between MCT oil and increased metabolism and appetite-suppressing and weight loss benefits. For these reasons, MCT oil is one of the most popular oil choices for products containing CBD.

3. Olive Oil. Yes, that olive oil. The same oil that is a staple in your kitchen can be used as a carrier oil. It has been popular for years because it is packed with antioxidants and because of its positive ratio of unsaturated to saturated fats. Olive oil has many well-known health benefits, including evidence that it can help reduce blood pressure and protect against heart disease. As a carrier oil, however, it has some drawbacks. First, it tends to be thicker, which may affect the measuring process. Also, the larger fat molecules in olive oil require more processing, which may reduce the amount of CBD your body absorbs. Finally, the scent and flavor are much stronger than most carrier oils.

4. Sunflower Oil. As you can guess, sunflower oil is produced from sunflower seeds, which are pressed to excrete the plant’s oil. Sunflower oil is high in vitamins A and E, polyunsaturated fats, and omega-six fats, which may lead to improved skin health. It is also linked to reduced levels of skin irritation. For these reasons, it is a common carrier oil for CBD skin balms and lotions.

5. Avocado. It’s not only good on your toast. Avocado pulp is pressed to produce its oil, which is high in oleic acid, good fats, antioxidants, and vitamins A, D, & E. Similar to MCT oil, avocado oil is highly bioavailable. However, it is much thicker. It does have several health benefits—it is known to be good for eyes, heart, cholesterol, skin, gums, and inflammation. Avocado oil has a nutty taste, so look out for that if it’s used in CBD oil tinctures. Avocado oil is mostly chosen for CBD skin balms and lotions because it has a slow drying time. Just like its namesake fruit, however, avocado oil tends to be one of the more expensive oils used as a carrier oil.

6. Grapeseed Oil. Grapeseed Oil is a by-product of the process of making wine, and it is most commonly associated with beauty products and cooking oil. However, it is also used as a carrier oil for CBD products. It is rich in omega-6 fatty acids and vitamin E, and it is beneficial for hair and skin. So, it is often incorporated into skin and hair products. Unfortunately, since grapeseed oil consists mostly of polyunsaturated fats, it is not the best carrier oil for CBD.
