Uses Of CBD Oil For Anxiety

Uses Of CBD Oil For Anxiety

There are around 113 types of cannabinoids, which are chemical compounds extracted from Cannabis (Hemp and Marijuana). Cannabidiol(CBD) is one such cannabinoid found naturally in Cannabis. There is promising research regarding the ability of Cannabidiol(CBD) oil in relieving anxiety.

In recent years, CBD has been promoted as a treatment for several medical conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression.

Nevertheless, the FDA has only approved one CBD medicine, known as Epidiolex. It is used to treat two critical forms of epilepsy like Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome. In addition, the FDA also approved the medication to treat seizures associated with tuberculosis sclerosis complex.

Can CBD Help Relieve Anxiety?

The National Institute on Drug Abuse asserts that CBD has been shown to lessen stress in animals like rats for Generalized Anxiety Disorder(GAD). In addition, study subjects were seen as having lower behavioral signs of anxiety.

In addition, physiological symptoms like increased heart rate also improved. However, more research needs to be done, especially on humans and GAD.

CBD may also treat people with other forms of anxiety, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD). In addition, it may help treat insomnia which was induced by anxiety.

Several studies conducted between 2011 and 2019 show that CBD helped alleviate the symptoms of anxiety and general discomfort during public speaking. It even helped people with social anxiety disorder, OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), and panic disorder. Additional studies showed that after taking CBD, almost 91% had lesser symptoms, 70% slept better, and in 80% cases, the anxiety improved.

Although the findings so far have been promising, yet one needs to keep in mind:

1. First, the study groups were small.
2. Second, none of the studies focussed on the long-term impact of taking CBD.

It means caution needs to be exercised. One cannot take CBD without the physician’s approval, and even then, it should be taken under their complete guidance.

Dosage Of CBD For Anxiety

There is no fixed dosage that is known to help all. However, according to studies, doses ranging between 300 mg to 600 mg can reduce the anxiety levels of those suffering from a social anxiety disorder. Nevertheless, the exact dosage is still not known, and hence, once again, one should not self administer CBD.

Forms In Which CBD Is Available

Cannabidiol is available in several different forms:

1. Oils
2. Drops
3. Capsules
4. Teas
5. Candies
6. Vapor

If you want to know which one is FDA approved, sadly, none. FDA does not monitor them, although some states may, but there is no way to know which is the safest form. Yet, the popularity of CBD is increasing. It is probably due to the success stories of those who suffer from anxiety disorders.

The Way CBD Works

Our body consists of several receptors, which are structures made of protein. These receptors attach to the cells in our body and are triggered by signals received from different stimuli. CBD interacts with two primary receptors found in the central and peripheral nervous system, namely – CB1 and CB2.

Studies show that CBD alters serotonin signals. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and hence has a vital role to play in our mental well-being. People suffering from depression and anxiety typically have low levels of serotonin.

The usual treatment of insufficient serotonin is SSRI or a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. Some examples of SSRI are Zoloft and Prozac, and these are available only by prescription. Off late, people are trying to manage their anxiety with CBD and not SSRI. It does not matter what treatment you decide to follow. It needs to be approved by your physician and must be taken only under their able guidance.

Side Effects Of CBD

Even though considered safe in low dosages, CBD may still show some side effects or adverse reactions. Being aware of them will make you cautious of the ill effects that may or might not follow. Its common side effects are:

1. Lethargy
2. Upset stomach
3. Appetite changes
4. Weight management issues
5. Insomnia

CBD interacts with drug metabolism enzymes, so one needs to be careful if already on some other medication. For example, it is known to interact with Coumadin (warfarin), a medicine for preventing blood clots. Therefore, if you are taking other medicines, inform your doctor about the same. The other potential drugs that CBD interacts with are:

1. Antihistamines
2. Antidepressants
3. Antipsychotics
4. Benzodiazepines

Similarly, if you have been taking CBD for some time now, stopping it suddenly may lead to the development of withdrawal symptoms which include:

1. Nausea
2. Irritability
3. Dizziness
4. Forgetfulness or haziness of mind

The Main Concern - Is CBD Legal?

If we talk about federal law, CBD derived or extracted from hemp plants having THC less than 0.3% is legal. Nonetheless, some state laws deem it illegal. Similarly, from a federal law perspective, CBD extracted from marijuana plants is illegal. It is because the federal laws prohibit marijuana cultivation. On the flip side, some state laws consider it legal. So there is no clear-cut distinction telling what kind of CBD is legal and whatnot. The best you can do is brush up your knowledge about your state laws and anywhere else where you intend to travel.

Does CBD Show Up In A Drug Test?

A typical drug test is made to check for THC and not CBD. In case the THC percentage is high in your CBD, it will show up in the test.  If you are using pure CBD products from trusted brands like NirvanaHaw , you need not worry. It has minimal THC and will not show up in the test.

Closing Thoughts On CBD Oil

CBD has shown great promise in the treatment of several ailments, including anxiety. Although there is a lack of proper long-term and in-depth studies, it still lies in the grey area. Therefore, use it under the guidance of your doctor. At present, more research is needed before it can be declared a miracle cure and safe for long-term use. Until then, to err on the side of caution is better.
